This was the first Mac Baren tobacco I’ve smoked which really convinced me. The tin note is smoky, woody and a distinct chocolate smell. After lighting up, it’s like having a campfire in your pipe. After a few puffs, I can recognize several flavors the tobacco offers. I can taste wood and smoke as well as nuts and very dark chocolate in the background. Almost all the time there is a dry earthy flavor. The Virginia tobacco is more in the background and adds sweet citrus notes and from time to time a bit hay. Overall, this tobacco is quite spicy and bold. It goes perfectly well with a smokey Islay wisky.

My faith in Mac Baren was restored by this tobacco and I will try more from the HH series.

Details

It is considered to be an English-style blend but, without Latakia. The meaning of “English-style” is because the techniques used in the production are very similar to how English factories used to produce tobacco in the past. HH Old Dark Fired is a bold flake of dark-fired burleys in a well-balanced unity with Flue-cured Virginias. This flake is Hot Pressed, meaning that during the pressing, heat is added by steam to the tobaccos which causes the tobacco to intensify the marrying process giving us a bolder tobacco. The robust, earthly flavour of the dark-fired burleys shines through in the taste, and you will experience a deeply satisfying smoke indeed.
